Welcome to the 2nd edition of WIB Meets. This time around we hooked up with an emcee who graced our pages numerous times without number and it was a pleasure getting her on the hot seat. She just released her latest project ‘Friction’ so we think it’s a great time to peer into her thoughts. As expected we learn about her one special super hero ability, her biggest highlight being an indie artist and a surreal encounter with Anthony Anderson and Sway.

Don’t foirget to also catch up with more of  Signif’s  on WIB HERE

For the benefit of anyone who’s been living in an underground bunker for the last ten years…who on earth are you?
Peace. I’m Signif an emcee by the way of Milwaukee who resides in NYC.

How did you get started in music, and what drives you to continue?
I got my start by watching my brothers and cousin partake in Hip Hop. The everyday struggles of life drive me to continue to write and perform music.

Do you remember the first recording/song you ever made?
My friend and I recording on a cassette tape while Super Mario Brothers played in the background as our beat definitely counts. My first studio recorded song I couldn’t even tell you, I have a couple hundred lost files.

If a movie about your life in music was to be made, what interesting/strange moments and stories would you share to make the movie cool?
I was a bit adventurous growing up, by the time I was 6 I was popping wheelies on my ten speeds and holding it for a few blocks. I raced on highways late at night driving from the passenger side of the car. (Don’t do this!) I also rode motorcycles and got into a accident that could have turned out worst than it was. Although I still have a D/M class license New York has jaded me from driving. It would probably be cool to share my love of staying in motion from roller-skating, skate boarding, bikes, motorcycles, and trucks. The people I grew up with would definitely be shocked that I’m on foot 85% of the time nowadays.

Are there any other interesting facts about you that hardly anyone else knows?
I wouldn’t call them interesting but I’m a vegetarian minimalist that digs plants and yoga.

What is the greatest thing about working in the music industry? And what would you change if you had the opportunity?

I’m an indie artist so the freedom to create what I want, how I want, and when I want is the greatest thing. Also touching people through music is always great as well. I wouldn’t change anything, but taking more risk early on is always good, that’s the one thing I would do different if I had the opportunity.

What have been the biggest highlights?

Definitely touring France last year has been the biggest highlight so far and the collaboration I did was Elzhi was pretty awesome too.

What has been your biggest challenge…and how did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges was moving to New York and also keeping that line of communication open with my city. I overcame it by checking in with the people and also contributing to the scene when I’m homing visiting and helping out other artists when I can.

Who have been the coolest, most memorable people you’ve met along the way, and how did they make an impact on your life?
The people I meet along the way and don’t even know their name or I can’t remember their name. The older lady from Asia (can’t remember where from) I sat next to on a plane or the elder vet who started a conversation with me while sitting on a park bench. Sometimes great advice/conversation comes from people you don’t know when you least expect it.

When you’re sitting on the porch age 97 what would you like to look back on and smile having achieved?
Just living life to the fullest by doing the things I enjoy and being able to help others along the way is all I could every ask for.

What has been your most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
The gig in Paris where I played with a Parisian band was the most memorable. I was so far from home but feeling so alive and having so much fun doing what I love.

What has been your strangest celebrity encounter?

Seeing Anthony Anderson in Forever 21. It was funny because he was giving me that look like, “do you know me”? It could have been an embarrassed look but F21 is alright with me. That was awhile ago though.
Sway walked up to me after a show at SOBs and asked me if I enjoyed the show. I looked around to make sure he wasn’t talking to anyone else but I didn’t have words for him, I was a bit shocked. That was many moons ago too.

Who would be your ideal dinner guest, living or dead, and what would you serve them?

Marvin Gaye, I would serve a light brunch nothing too heavy.
