I’ve had Kenny Segal‘s ‘protect yo chain’ on repeat for the last two days. It’s one of the livest tracks I’ve heard this year, a banger in the wildest sense, full of lots of cool elements from different genres that come together. Essentially he remixes Gang Starr‘s ‘Just To Get A Rep’ and Biggie‘s ‘Machine Gun Funk’ but it’s really slickly done. It almost has that Southern bounce sound but it never really reaches in to trap and the samples are gloriously manipulated, while Guru and Biggie’s contrasting deliveries switch up the energy. So you get all those different energies – old school hip hop, Prefuse 73-esque electronica, trap – and it combines for something really, really dope.
